- Upload it to DiscordFor your profile, open User Settings, then Profiles, and choose Change Banner. For a server, go to Server Settings, then Overview, and scroll to the server banner section.
Who can use an animated Discord banner
Discord decides who can show an animated banner, and its rules change from time to time. At the time of writing, Discord's help center says:
- Profile banners: only Nitro subscribers can upload an image or animated GIF as a profile banner (Nitro Basic doesn't list it as a perk). Banners must be PNG, JPG or animated GIF, under 10 MB, and at least 680×240 pixels.
- Server banners: a static banner unlocks at Server Boost Level 2, and an animated banner at Level 3 (14 Boosts at the time of writing).
- Server banner size: 960×540 in a 16:9 ratio is recommended for both static and animated server banners.
If a server drops from Level 3 to Level 2, Discord keeps the same banner but shows it as a still image. Check Discord's help center before you pay for Nitro or Boosts, since perks can change.
No Nitro or Level 3 server yet? The GIF still works as a header on your server's website, in a stream overlay or as a welcome message in a channel.
Design tips for Discord banners
Discord's server banner guidelines suggest keeping the top 48 px simple, because your server's name sits over it, and they lean toward banners without logos or busy text. For a server banner, keep the wording short and let the moving waves do the work. Profile banners have more room for your name and a tagline.
Animated server banners play for 5 seconds when the server loads, then pause, and they play again when someone hovers over them or scrolls back to them. Members with reduced motion turned on see a still banner. The first few seconds of motion matter most.
On profiles, your avatar can overlap part of the banner, so check Discord's preview before you save and nudge the crop if your name gets covered.
Round out your server with a 112 px emoji from the pet-pet GIF maker, fly your logo with the flag GIF maker, or add a sparkly welcome from the glitter GIF maker. The Discord GIF maker covers chat GIFs, and the GIF templates gallery has the rest. Your photo is processed on your device and never uploaded.
