How to make a GIF from photos
This GIF maker from photos and images reads JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF, so shots straight from your camera roll work. Each image becomes one frame of the animation.
- Select your photosTap Pick a video or photos on a phone, or Choose files on a computer, and select 2 to 100 images at once. You can also drag a batch of images onto the drop zone.
- Put them in orderDrag the thumbnails to reorder the frames. The GIF plays them in that order, then loops.
- Set the frame timeFrame time is how long each photo stays on screen. Try 0.5 s for a slideshow, or 0.1 to 0.2 s for a flip-book or stop-motion effect.
- Crop and exportPick a Crop ratio so every frame has the same shape, then tap Export GIF and Download GIF.
Tips for a smooth photo GIF
- Match the shape. A mix of portrait and landscape shots makes the GIF jump around. A shared Crop ratio like 1:1 or 4:5 gives every frame the same size.
- Keep the camera still for stop-motion. Use a tripod or prop your phone against something, and move only the subject between shots. Small changes from frame to frame read as smooth motion.
- Time it to the content. A before-and-after or a step-by-step recipe needs about a second per frame so people can take it in. A flip-book of a jump needs a tenth of that.
- Watch the frame count. File size grows with every photo. Ten photos at 480 px share easily; a 100-photo GIF may need a smaller width to fit a chat app's limit. The Where it fits strip under the preview tells you.
- Fix exposure first. If one photo is much brighter than the rest, it flashes on every loop. Edit it in your photo app before you add it.
iPhone photos and HEIC files
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. You don't need to convert them: pick them from your library and DropGIF reads them as they are. And since this photo to GIF maker builds the GIF on your phone, nothing from your camera roll is uploaded.
Want to use the motion in a Live Photo? Save it as a video first (in the Photos app, open Share and choose Save as Video), then use video to GIF instead.
Image to GIF, PNG to GIF, and single photos
PNG frames from an art app. If you draw an animation frame by frame, export each one as a PNG, drop them all in, and drag to fix the order if needed. To keep a see-through background, turn on Keep transparency under Advanced. GIF transparency is 1-bit, so each pixel ends up fully clear or fully solid.
Only one photo? A GIF needs at least two frames, but the templates animate a single image. Wave it like a flag, put it in a beating heart, or make it burst in a cartoon explosion.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a GIF from multiple photos?
Select 2 to 100 photos in DropGIF, drag them into order, set the Frame time and tap Export GIF. It's free, with no watermark, and your photos aren't uploaded.
Can I make a GIF from images on my iPhone?
Yes. Open DropGIF in Safari, tap Pick a video or photos and choose images from your library. HEIC photos work without converting.
How many photos can a GIF have?
DropGIF takes 2 to 100 images per GIF. More frames make a bigger file, so lower the width if you need to fit a platform's upload limit.
Can I turn PNG images into a GIF with a transparent background?
Yes. Turn on Keep transparency under Advanced before you export. Each pixel in a GIF is either fully clear or fully solid, so soft edges get a hard outline.
What frame time should I use for a photo GIF?
About 0.5 seconds per photo works for a slideshow. For stop-motion or a flip-book effect, try 0.1 to 0.2 seconds.
