How to resize a GIF

This GIF resizer changes the width and scales the height to match, so your GIF never looks squashed. To resize a GIF:

  1. Drop the GIFDrag it onto the page, tap Choose files, or paste it with Ctrl/⌘ + V. The corner of the preview shows the current size, like Preview · 480 × 270.
  2. Pick a widthUnder Size, choose 240, 320 or 480 px. Pro adds 640, 800 and 1080. The height follows the GIF's shape, and the preview updates right away.
  3. Change the shape, if you need toResizing keeps the proportions. To make a wide GIF square or tall, pick 1:1, 9:16 or 4:5 under Crop first.
  4. ExportTap Export GIF, then Download GIF on a computer or Share or save GIF on a phone.

Which width to pick

For a square GIF, the height matches the width.
WidthHeight at 16:9Good for
240 px135 pxTiny reactions and the smallest files
320 px180 pxEmail, Slack and quick replies
480 px270 pxMost chat apps and posts (the free maximum)
640 px (Pro)360 pxSlides, docs and blog posts
800 px (Pro)450 pxScreen recordings with small text
1080 px (Pro)608 pxBig screens, when file size isn't tight

Width matters more than it looks. The pixel count grows with the square of the width, so going from 480 to 320 px leaves only 44% of the pixels, and the file shrinks along with them. If you're resizing to get under an upload limit, the GIF compressor can pick the width for you.

Resize without stretching or upscaling

DropGIF never makes a GIF wider than its source. If your GIF is 300 px wide and you pick 480, it stays at 300 px. Stretching a GIF up doesn't add detail. It only makes blurrier pixels and a heavier file. And because the height always follows the width, nothing gets squashed or pulled out of shape.

Going down is where resizing works well. A big GIF scaled down looks crisp, because several source pixels blend into each one you keep. GIFs larger than 1080 px on their longest side are scaled to 1080 when they open, and free exports go up to 480 px wide. To keep more of a large GIF, Pro exports up to 1080 px.

To change the shape rather than the size, use Crop GIF, then come back to Size. Resizing a video or a set of photos works the same way; start from video to GIF.

Resizing for emoji, emotes and email

Some places want a smaller size than the 240 px chip. For those, use the Fit buttons in Where it fits, which can set any width:

  • Discord emoji: the Emoji Fit crops a centered square and sizes it to 128 px, aiming under Discord's 256 KB limit. The Discord GIF maker has more on emoji.
  • Twitch emotes: the Twitch Fit makes a 112 px square and aims under 1 MB. Twitch also allows only 60 frames, so if the strip still shows a ✗, remove extra frames in the Frames strip.
  • Slack emoji: there's no Slack emoji Fit, but the Emoji Fit gives you the same 128 px square. Slack suggests staying under 128 KB, so check the estimate.
  • Email: the Email Fit aims under 1 MB, the usual advice for newsletters. 320 px is plenty for most emails.

When Fit picks a width that isn't one of the chips, the Size section says so, for example "Set to 360px by Fit." The GIF size limits guide lists every platform, and the GIF editor shows everything else you can change.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize a GIF without losing quality?

Resize down, not up. Shrinking a large GIF keeps it sharp, while stretching a small one only blurs it, which is why DropGIF never goes past the original width. Keep Colors at 256 under Advanced.

Does resizing a GIF keep the animation?

Yes. Every frame is resized the same way and keeps its original timing. DropGIF opens GIFs with up to 300 frames; longer ones are thinned evenly, with the timing kept.

How do I resize a GIF to 128×128?

Use the Emoji Fit in the Where it fits strip. It crops the GIF to a centered square and sets it to 128 px, aiming under Discord's 256 KB emoji limit.

Can I change the height of a GIF?

Not on its own. The height follows the width so the GIF keeps its shape. To change the shape, crop it first, for example to 1:1 or 9:16, then pick a width.

Can I make a GIF bigger?

No. DropGIF doesn't upscale past the GIF's own width, because enlarging a GIF adds blur and file size, not detail.

Is the GIF resizer free?

Yes, for widths up to 480 px, with no watermark or sign-up, and the GIF never leaves your device. Pro adds 640, 800 and 1080 px for $4.99 a month, $29 a year or $49 once.

Need bigger, sharper GIFs?

Pro removes ads and unlocks 1080px, 60-second clips, 30 fps, batches of 10 and HD MP4, WebP and APNG export. $4.99 a month, $29 a year, or $49 once.
