How to convert MP4 to GIF
The MP4 opens straight into the editor, and the whole conversion runs on your device. Here's how to convert MP4 to GIF in five steps:
- Add your MP4Drag the file anywhere onto the page, tap Choose files, or paste it with Ctrl/⌘+V. Long videos are fine, because you pick the part you want next.
- Trim it with the yellow handlesDrag the handles on the Trim timeline in 0.1-second steps. For a clip longer than 8 seconds, DropGIF starts you on the first 6. On a computer, press I and O to set the start and end at the playhead.
- Choose a widthUnder Size, pick 240, 320 or 480 px. 480 px is the free maximum and looks sharp in chat apps.
- Set the frame rateUnder Motion, 15 fps is the default. Use 10 or 12 for talking heads and screen recordings, and 20 for fast action.
- Check the size and exportThe Where it fits strip shows a check or a cross for Slack, Discord, X, email and emoji. Tap Fit next to any cross, then Export GIF. Save it with Download GIF on a computer, or Share or save GIF on a phone.
MP4 to GIF in high quality
A GIF can't match an MP4 exactly. Each GIF frame holds at most 256 colors, while the video inside an MP4 has millions, so high quality means spending the file size where it shows. Start from the original MP4 when you can: a clip that's been downloaded and re-posted has already lost detail the GIF can't restore.
| Setting | Best quality | Lower it when |
|---|---|---|
| Width (Size) | 480 px free, up to 1080 px with Pro | You've already lowered the frame rate and the GIF is still too big |
| Frame rate (Motion) | 20 fps free, 30 fps with Pro | The motion is slow, like a talking head or a gentle pan |
| Colors (Advanced) | 256 | The clip is a screen recording or cartoon with few colors |
| Dithering (Advanced) | Smooth, for camera footage | It's flat graphics or text, where None stays crisp and smaller |
| HD palette (Advanced, Pro) | On, so each frame gets its own 256 colors | The clip is one short scene with steady lighting |
Trim is the quality setting most people forget. Every second you cut frees room for more width or a higher frame rate under the same upload limit. For a deeper look at palettes and dithering, see the high-quality GIF maker.
Why your GIF is bigger than the MP4
Video codecs like H.264 predict motion between frames and discard detail you won't notice. GIF compresses each frame with a simple lossless method and can only reuse areas that stay exactly the same. In one example on Google's web.dev, a 3.7 MB GIF was 551 KB as an MP4, so expect your GIF to be several times larger than its source.
Upload limits are usually what force a choice. These are the main ones DropGIF checks against:
| Platform | Limit | Good starting point |
|---|---|---|
| SlackSlack has no GIF cap of its own. Under 5 MB loads quickly and animates smoothly for everyone. | 5 MBsuggested | 320px, 12 fps, up to 5 s |
| DiscordUpload limit without Nitro since August 2026 (it was 10 MB). Nitro Basic allows 50 MB. | 20 MB | 480px, 15 fps, up to 12 s |
| X (Twitter)GIF limit when posting on the web. The X mobile app allows 5 MB. | 15 MB | 480px, 15 fps, up to 9 s |
| EmailBest practice for newsletters. Classic Outlook for Windows shows only the first frame. | 1 MBsuggested | 320px, 10 fps, up to 3 s |
Limits checked October 22, 2026. See the full list of GIF size limits.
Tap Slack, Discord or X under Fit to an upload limit and DropGIF picks the width, frame rate, colors and compression for you. If the clip is headed for Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp, you may not need a GIF at all. Tap Make an MP4 on the result screen, or read GIF to MP4.
Sound, length and MP4s that won't open
- Sound. A GIF has no audio track, so the sound is left out. If the audio matters, share the video itself.
- Length. An MP4 of any length opens, up to a 2 GB file. Free GIFs can run up to 20 seconds and Pro GIFs up to 60, though two to six seconds usually loops best.
- Unusual codecs. MP4 is a container, and the video inside is usually H.264 but can be HEVC, AV1 or something older. If your browser can't play it, DropGIF converts it on your device first: a 31 MB download the first time, for files up to 250 MB.
- Clips from a link. DropGIF doesn't download from YouTube, TikTok or X. Get your own copy of the clip onto your device first, and only use clips you have the rights to.
Edit the clip before you export
Before you tap Export GIF, you can also:
- Crop to 1:1 for a chat bubble or 9:16 for a phone-shaped clip, then drag the box to frame the subject.
- Add a caption in the Outline, Shadow or Box style, at the top or bottom. The add text to GIF page has tips for captions that stay readable.
- Change the motion. The Speed slider runs from 0.25× to 4×, and Direction plays the clip Forward, in Reverse or as a Boomerang. See reverse GIF for loops that run both ways.
- Set the loop under Advanced: Forever, Once or 3 times.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MP4 to GIF for free?
Drop the MP4 into DropGIF, trim it with the yellow handles and tap Export GIF. Free GIFs go up to 480 px wide, 20 seconds and 20 fps, with no watermark and no sign-up.
How do I convert MP4 to GIF in high quality?
Start from the original file, keep Colors at 256 with Smooth dithering, and use 480 px at 15 to 20 fps. Trim the clip short so those settings still fit your platform's upload limit.
Is my MP4 uploaded anywhere?
No. DropGIF converts the MP4 inside your browser, so the video stays on your device.
Does the GIF keep the sound from my MP4?
No. The GIF format can't hold audio, so the sound is dropped. If you need sound, share the MP4 itself.
Why won't my MP4 open?
The video inside may use a codec your browser can't play. DropGIF then converts it on your device, which works for files up to 250 MB. For a bigger file, try another browser or export a smaller copy.
Can I convert several MP4 files to GIF at once?
Yes, with Pro. Drop up to 10 videos, choose one set of settings, and download all the GIFs as a zip. The free version converts one video at a time.
