How to convert a YouTube video to GIF
- Download the video fileFor your own uploads, use YouTube Studio's Download option (details below). For anyone else's video, get the creator's permission and ask them for the file.
- Drop the MP4 into DropGIFDrag it onto Drop a video or images here, or click Choose files. The video is read in your browser and never sent to a server.
- Trim to the momentMove the yellow Trim handles until only the part you want is left. Short is better: 2 to 6 seconds makes a GIF people actually watch to the end.
- Choose a widthUnder Size, 480 px is the sharpest free option and 320 px makes a lighter file. YouTube footage is usually 16:9, so 480 px wide works out to 480 × 270.
- Export GIFTap Export GIF, check the preview, then Download GIF or Copy it straight into a chat.
Why you can't paste a YouTube link
You might expect a box to paste a YouTube link. DropGIF doesn't have one, on purpose. At the time of writing (October 2026), YouTube's Terms of Service say you may not access, reproduce or download content except as expressly authorized by the service, or with prior written permission from YouTube and, where it applies, the rights holders. Pulling a video from a link doesn't fit either case, so DropGIF only works with files that are already on your device.
That also keeps things simple on the rights side. If the video is yours, you're set. If it belongs to someone else, a link isn't permission: ask the creator first, and credit them when you share the GIF.
Download your own videos from YouTube Studio
At the time of writing, Google's YouTube Help describes these steps on a computer: sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content in the left panel, open the menu on the video you want, and select Download.
- You get an MP4 in 720p or 360p, depending on the video's size. That's plenty, since a free GIF tops out at 480 px wide.
- Each video can be downloaded up to five times per day.
- Videos that were removed, have a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, or use a preapproved audio track can't be downloaded.
- Need every upload at once? YouTube Help points to Google Takeout for that.
If you still have the original export from your editing app, use that instead. It's usually higher quality than the Studio download, so text and fine detail stay crisper when you turn the yt video to GIF.
