How to make a GIF with your webcam
It works on computers and phones, in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. To make a webcam GIF:
- Tap Record with cameraYour browser asks to use the camera. Choose Allow. The microphone is never asked for, because GIFs are silent.
- Frame yourselfThe preview shows what will be recorded. Phones start with the front camera; tap the switch button for the back one.
- Press record and wait for 3, 2, 1The countdown gives you a moment to get ready. The time shows as you go, and a clip can run up to 60 seconds.
- StopTap Stop (or press Esc on a computer). The clip opens in the editor with all of it selected, up to 20 s on the free plan.
- Trim, caption and exportDrag the trim handles to the best moment, add a caption if you like, and tap Export GIF. Save it with Download GIF, or Share or save GIF on a phone.
Tips for a reaction GIF people reuse
- Keep it short. Two to four seconds is plenty. Trim to the moment the reaction lands, so it reads at a glance in a chat.
- Face the light. A window or a lamp in front of you, not behind. GIFs have 256 colors at most, and a dark, grainy face loses the most.
- Make it loop. Under Motion, set Direction to Boomerang so the clip plays forward then backward, with no jump at the end.
- Add a caption. Bold top or bottom text turns a face into a reaction. The add text to GIF page has caption ideas.
- Hold still at the end. A beat of stillness before you stop gives the trim handles a clean place to land.
If the camera doesn't start
The recorder tells you what went wrong and how to fix it. The usual causes:
- Camera blocked for the site. Click or tap the camera or lock icon next to the address, allow the camera for dropgif.com, then try again. In Safari on a Mac, it's under Safari › Settings for this website.
- Camera blocked for the browser. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and turn on your browser. On Windows, open Settings › Privacy & security › Camera and allow apps to use it.
- Camera in use. A video call or another app may be holding it. Close that app, then try again.
- Opened inside another app. Links opened in Instagram, TikTok or other apps often can't use the camera. Open the page in Safari or Chrome instead.
Sizes for chats and sharing
A two-to-four-second webcam GIF at 320 to 480 px usually lands well under every chat app's limit. If it doesn't, tap a button under Fit to an upload limit and DropGIF trades width, frame rate and colors to get under it.
| Platform | Limit | Good starting point |
|---|---|---|
| SlackSlack has no GIF cap of its own. Under 5 MB loads quickly and animates smoothly for everyone. | 5 MBsuggested | 320px, 12 fps, up to 5 s |
| DiscordUpload limit without Nitro since August 2026 (it was 10 MB). Nitro Basic allows 50 MB. | 20 MB | 480px, 15 fps, up to 12 s |
| Slack emojiSquare images under 128 KB work best; up to 50 frames. | 128 KBsuggested | 128px square, 12 fps, up to 2 s |
| Discord emojiAnimated custom emoji. Square, 128×128 works best. | 256 KB | 128px square, 15 fps, up to 2 s |

Sending it to Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp? Those apps play videos better than GIFs, so tap Make an MP4 on the result screen. Making an emoji? Crop to 1:1 and use the Discord GIF maker tips. For a GIF of your screen instead, use screen to GIF.
Your face stays on your device
The camera feed goes from your camera to your browser and nowhere else. The clip is recorded by the browser into this tab's memory and the GIF is made on your device, with no upload, no account and no watermark. The camera turns off as soon as you stop or close the recorder, and closing the tab removes the clip.
Frequently asked questions
Is the webcam GIF maker free?
Yes, with no watermark and no sign-up. Free GIFs are up to 480 px wide and 20 seconds long; Pro allows 1080 px and 60 seconds.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On iPhone and Android it opens the front camera first, with a button to switch to the back camera. Safari needs iOS 14.5 or later to record.
How long can I record?
Up to 60 seconds per clip. On the free plan you then pick up to 20 seconds of it for the GIF.
Does it record sound?
No. GIFs can't hold sound, so DropGIF only asks for the camera, never the microphone.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The clip stays in your browser and the GIF is made on your device. Nothing is sent to DropGIF or anyone else.
Why is my GIF mirrored, or not mirrored?
The preview is shown like a mirror, because that's easier to frame. The recording is saved the way the camera sees you, so text behind you reads the right way round.
