How to compress a GIF

This GIF compressor rebuilds your GIF to fit a size target, and you see the estimated size before you export:

  1. Drop the GIFDrag it onto the page, tap Choose files, or paste it with Ctrl/⌘ + V. Every frame keeps its timing, and a live size estimate appears under the preview.
  2. Tap a Fit buttonUnder Size, Fit to an upload limit has Slack (5 MB), Discord (20 MB) and X (15 MB). DropGIF tries settings until the estimate lands under the limit, then tells you what it picked, such as "Fits at 320px, 128 colors".
  3. Or start from Where it fitsThe Where it fits strip shows a ✓ or ✗ for Slack, Discord, X, Discord emoji, Twitch emotes and email. Each ✗ says how far over you are and has its own Fit button.
  4. Export and compareTap Export GIF and check the new size on the result screen. If it came out the same size as your original or bigger, DropGIF tells you, and you can keep your original.

What Fit changes, and what it costs

Compressing a GIF always costs something. The format already packs its 256 colors per frame without loss, so a smaller file means storing less: fewer pixels, fewer colors or less change between frames. Fit tries to give up as little as it can.

Fit looks for the widest size that gets under your limit. If none works, it turns up compression (pixels that barely change between frames are left as they were), then lowers the colors, trying the widths again at each step. It aims a little under the limit, so a small error in the estimate can't push you over.

Here's what to look for in the preview: fewer colors show up as banding in skies and skin, more compression can leave faint trails where things move slowly, and a smaller width softens fine detail and small text.

If even its smallest settings are too big, Fit tells you roughly how many frames to keep. Remove the rest in the Frames strip and tap Fit again.

Compress a GIF by hand

Prefer to choose yourself? Each of these updates the size estimate as you go, roughly in order of how much they save:

  • Width. Pick 240, 320 or 480 under Size. A GIF 320 px wide has less than half the pixels of one at 480. See the GIF resizer for more.
  • Frames. In the Frames strip, remove a pause at the start or end, or frames that repeat. To halve the frame count without speeding the GIF up, remove every other frame, then set Speed to 0.5×.
  • Colors. Under Advanced, try 128 or 64. Cartoons, screen recordings and text hold up well. Photos band sooner.
  • Dithering. Smooth adds a fine grain that doesn't compress well. Pattern or None often makes a smaller file, especially for flat graphics.
  • Crop. Cut away borders, black bars or empty background with Crop GIF, so every pixel you keep shows something.

Frame rate is a control only for videos. If you still have the original clip, a GIF made from it at 12 fps with the video to GIF converter is usually smaller and sharper than a GIF squeezed twice.

Why a compressed GIF can come out bigger

DropGIF compresses by re-encoding: it reads every frame, builds a fresh color palette and writes a new GIF that stores only the parts of each frame that change. Plenty of GIFs shrink a lot this way. But a GIF that was already carefully optimized has little left to give, and rebuilding it at the same width with 256 colors can give you a file that's the same size or a little larger.

When that happens, DropGIF tells you and lets you keep your original. To actually shrink it, go one step down in width or colors and export again. We don't promise a percentage, because the savings depend on the GIF you start with.

Transparent GIFs shrink less, because DropGIF writes each frame in full to keep the clear areas clean. If you don't need the see-through background, set Transparency to Off under Advanced (clear areas turn white).

Pick a size target

There's no box for typing an exact size in KB. You pick where the GIF is going, and DropGIF aims under that limit:

Limits checked October 22, 2026. See the full list of GIF size limits.

Posting from the X app? Its 5 MB limit matches the Slack target, so use the Slack Fit. Making a server emoji? See the Discord GIF maker. Going to Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp? Skip compression and convert the GIF to MP4, which is usually much smaller. Every platform is in the GIF size limits guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a GIF without losing quality?

You can't make a GIF much smaller with no loss at all, because the format is already compressed. You lose the least by cropping empty space and removing frames you don't need, then lowering the width before the colors.

Can I compress a GIF to a specific size, like 2 MB?

Not by typing a number. The Fit buttons aim under Slack (5 MB), Discord (20 MB) and X (15 MB), and Where it fits adds Discord emoji, Twitch emotes and email. The live estimate shows the size as you change any setting.

Why did my GIF get bigger after compressing it?

It was probably already well optimized, so re-encoding it at the same width and colors had nothing left to remove. DropGIF tells you, so you can keep the original or try a smaller width.

How do I make a GIF small enough for Discord?

Tap the Discord Fit button. As of October 2026, free accounts can upload files up to 20 MB. Custom emoji must be under 256 KB, so use the Emoji Fit in Where it fits for those.

Is there a limit on the GIFs I can compress?

DropGIF opens GIFs with up to 300 frames and 1080 px per frame; longer GIFs are thinned evenly with their timing kept. Free exports go up to 480 px wide and 20 seconds.

Is this GIF compressor free, and is my GIF uploaded?

It's free, with no watermark or sign-up. The GIF is compressed in your browser and never leaves your device.
