How to make a transparent GIF

This transparent GIF maker works with videos and images. Pick your source, then choose how the background should disappear:

1. Add your fileDrop in a video, or a PNG or WebP that already has a see-through background.

The three transparency modes

• Keep transparency is for images that already have clear areas, like PNG stickers or WebP exports from a design app. DropGIF keeps the clear parts clear.
• Remove a color works like a chroma key. Tap the background with the eyedropper, then raise the tolerance slider until the backdrop is gone without eating into your subject. It's the right choice for green screens, plain walls and screen recordings.
• Remove background is a bg remover for GIFs: an on-device AI model that cuts out people. The model downloads once, the first time you use it, then runs locally. Your video is never uploaded.

If the backdrop is one solid color, start with Remove a color; it usually gives crisper edges. Use Remove background when the scene behind the person is busy, like a room or a street.

Why edges get halos, and how to avoid them

GIF transparency is 1-bit: each pixel is either fully clear or fully solid, with nothing in between. A soft edge can't fade out, so the border pixels keep a trace of whatever color sat behind the subject. Post that GIF on a different background and those pixels show up as a light or dark fringe, called a halo.

• Match the matte to where it'll be posted. Edge pixels carry the color they were cut from. For Discord's dark theme, cut your subject out from a dark backdrop, or export your source from a design app with a dark matte. For a white web page, use white.
• Shoot against something flat. A green screen, a plain wall or a sheet of colored paper keys far more cleanly than a living room.
• Light the backdrop evenly. Shadows and wrinkles create several shades, which forces a higher tolerance that starts eating into your subject.
• Keep the key color off your subject. A green shirt in front of a green screen will vanish too.

Transparent GIFs for Discord and Twitch emotes

Emotes are the most common reason to want a transparent background GIF: they sit cleanly in chat in any theme. Crop to 1:1, keep the clip to a second or two, and choose the smallest Size. Discord custom emoji must be under 256 KB, with 128×128 recommended; the Discord GIF maker page covers emoji sizing in detail. Twitch has its own rules for animated emotes, so check them in your creator dashboard before uploading.
