How to turn a Twitter video into a GIF

  1. Get the video file onto your deviceDropGIF works with files, not links. Use your original recording, or download the media from your own posts with X's archive (steps below).
  2. Drop it inDrag the video onto Drop a video or images here, or tap Pick a video or photos on a phone. MP4, MOV and WebM all work.
  3. Trim the momentSet the yellow handles on the Trim timeline around the 2 to 6 seconds you want. Each nudge is 0.1 s, so you can start right on the beat.
  4. Size it for where it's goingPick a width under Size, or tap a chip under Fit to an upload limit. Where it fits, under the preview, marks which of X, Discord and Slack the GIF will upload to.
  5. Export and shareTap Export GIF, then Download GIF, Copy or Share. No watermark is added.

Why GIFs on X are really videos

When you post a GIF on X, it doesn't come back out as a GIF. At the time of writing (October 2026), X's developer documentation shows a GIF in a post labeled as an animated GIF but delivered as an MP4 video file. That's why a GIF you save from X usually turns out to be a short video, and why it won't animate in places that only accept real GIF files, like many email signatures or old forums.

A twitter video to GIF converter fixes that: drop in the MP4 and you get a true .gif for Discord, Slack, iMessage or Google Slides. Only convert clips you made or have permission to use. DropGIF doesn't accept X links and never downloads anything from X.

Get your own media from X: go to Settings and privacy, open your account settings and choose Download an archive of your data (the menu names differ slightly between the app and the web). X verifies it's you and says the archive can take a few days to prepare. It includes the media you posted, so GIFs you shared may come back as MP4 files you can drop straight in.

Making a GIF to post on X

Going the other way? At the time of writing, X's help center lists GIFs up to 15 MB when you post from the web and 5 MB from the mobile app. Tap the X chip under Fit to an upload limit and DropGIF lowers the width, frame rate and colors until the GIF lands under the web limit. Posting from your phone? Start smaller, around 320 px at 12 fps, and watch the live size estimate.

  • 480 px at 15 fps is a good starting point for an x video to GIF clip with people or motion.
  • Crop 1:1 or 4:5 for a face or a reaction. It takes up more of the feed than a wide 16:9 frame.
  • Add a caption with the Outline style so it reads on any background. The caption GIF maker has ideas.

The GIF size limits page compares X, Discord, Slack and email side by side. For clips from anywhere else, use the video to GIF converter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste a Twitter link to make a GIF?

No. DropGIF doesn't download videos from X or any other link, because platform terms don't allow it. Use your own recording or the media from your X archive, then drop the file in.

Why does a GIF I saved from X come out as an MP4?

X serves GIFs as MP4 video. Drop that MP4 into DropGIF and export it to get a real GIF file.

What size GIF can I post on X?

Up to 15 MB from a web browser and 5 MB from X's phone app, per X's help center at the time of writing (October 2026). If yours is over, the Fit button shrinks it.
