How to convert PNG to GIF

Drop in one PNG or up to 100. Each image becomes a frame, in the order shown in the Frames strip under the preview:

  1. Add your PNGsSelect them all at once with Choose files, or drag the batch onto the page. JPG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF images can be mixed in.
  2. Put the frames in orderIn the Frames strip, drag a thumbnail to move it, or select it and use the arrows. The trash icon on a frame removes it.
  3. Set the timingFrame time under Motion sets how long every frame shows. Tap the time under a single frame to change just that one, like a longer pause on the last frame.
  4. Check the transparencyIf your PNGs have see-through areas, DropGIF sets Transparency under Advanced to Keep for you. On a phone, Advanced is under More.
  5. Export GIFTap Export GIF, then Download GIF on a computer or Share or save GIF on a phone.

Making a slideshow from camera photos instead? The GIF maker from photos has tips for that.

Turn a PNG sequence into an animation

A PNG sequence is a numbered set of frames, the kind you get from a drawing app, a 3D render or a sprite sheet cut into tiles. Name the files with leading zeros, like frame-001.png and frame-002.png, so your file browser lists them in the right order, then check the Frames strip for any that slipped out of place.

GIF stores timing in hundredths of a second, so these values are saved exactly.
LookFrame timeSame as
Smooth motion0.05 s20 fps
Classic cartoon or pixel-art sprite0.1 s10 fps
Stop-motion, or choppy on purpose0.15–0.2 s5–7 fps
Slideshow or before-and-after0.5–1 s1–2 fps

The GIF takes its shape from the first image. If your frames come in different sizes, choose a Crop ratio, then pick Fill to cover the frame or Fit whole to show each image uncropped. Free GIFs run up to 20 seconds, so a 100-frame sequence can show each frame for up to 0.2 s on the free plan.

Keeping PNG transparency in a GIF

PNG and GIF handle transparency differently. A PNG pixel can be partly see-through, which is how soft shadows and smooth edges fade out. GIF has 1-bit transparency: each pixel is fully clear or fully solid. DropGIF keeps the clear areas clear, but anything in between has to become one or the other.

  • Hard-edged art converts cleanly. Pixel art, flat icons and stickers with a crisp outline look just like the PNG.
  • Soft edges get a fringe. Glows, drop shadows and feathered edges pick up a jagged rim. Remove them before you export the PNGs, or flatten them onto a color close to where the GIF will be posted.
  • A plain white background, but no transparency? Choose Remove color, tap Pick from preview and click the white, then adjust the Tolerance.

For cut-outs from video and fixes for halos, see the transparent GIF maker. If you need smooth, partial transparency, Pro can export WebP or APNG instead of GIF.

One PNG? Make it move

A GIF made from one still image wouldn't move, so DropGIF starts a single PNG with a gentle Zoom. In the Frames strip, swap it for Pan, Shake, Pulse, Wobble or Spin, and set the loop length to 1.2, 2 or 3 seconds. Frame rate under Motion controls how smooth the movement looks.

Shake suits a logo that's 'vibrating with rage', while Pulse and Wobble work well for stickers and emoji. Add a line of text with Caption (add text to GIF has ideas), or try a template like the pet-pet or the waving flag for more elaborate motion.

APNG files keep their animation

An APNG is an animated PNG. Drop one in and DropGIF reads every frame with its original timing, up to 300 frames and 1080 px per frame. From there you can remove frames, reorder them or change one frame's time in the Frames strip, and use Speed to make the whole animation faster or slower.

A note for Safari users. As of October 2026, Safari doesn't let DropGIF see an APNG's individual frames, so it opens as a single still image. Chrome, Edge and Firefox keep the animation. Animated WebP files behave the same way; see WebP to GIF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to GIF?

Drop your PNGs into DropGIF, put them in order in the Frames strip, set the Frame time and tap Export GIF. It's free, with no watermark, and the images stay on your device.

Can I make an animated GIF from a PNG sequence?

Yes. Select up to 100 PNG frames at once, check their order and set a frame time, such as 0.1 seconds for 10 fps.

Does PNG to GIF keep the transparent background?

Yes. DropGIF sets Transparency to Keep automatically when your PNGs have clear areas. GIF pixels are either fully clear or fully solid, so semi-transparent edges become hard.

Can I convert a single PNG to a GIF?

Yes. A single PNG gets a motion effect, starting with Zoom, so the GIF actually moves. You can switch to Pan, Shake, Pulse, Wobble or Spin.

Can I convert APNG to GIF?

Yes, in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. DropGIF keeps every frame and its timing, up to 300 frames. In Safari, an APNG currently opens as a still image.

How many PNGs can I turn into one GIF?

Up to 100. Free GIFs can be up to 20 seconds long, so with 100 frames each one can show for up to 0.2 seconds on the free plan.

Need bigger, sharper GIFs?

Pro removes ads and unlocks 1080px, 60-second clips, 30 fps, batches of 10 and HD MP4, WebP and APNG export. $4.99 a month, $29 a year, or $49 once.
