GIF size limits at a glance
At the time of writing (October 2026), free Discord accounts can upload files up to 20 MB, X accepts GIFs up to 15 MB on the web and 5 MB in its mobile app, and Slack takes files up to 1 GB, though we recommend keeping GIFs under 5 MB so they load quickly. For email, keep GIFs under 1 MB. Limits change, so the table below is the quickest check.
| Platform | Limit | Good starting point |
|---|---|---|
| SlackSlack has no GIF cap of its own. Under 5 MB loads quickly and animates smoothly for everyone. | 5 MBsuggested | 320px, 12 fps, up to 5 s |
| DiscordUpload limit without Nitro since August 2026 (it was 10 MB). Nitro Basic allows 50 MB. | 20 MB | 480px, 15 fps, up to 12 s |
| X (Twitter)GIF limit when posting on the web. The X mobile app allows 5 MB. | 15 MB | 480px, 15 fps, up to 9 s |

Discord: free accounts, Nitro and emoji
Discord raised the free upload limit to 20 MB in August 2026, so older guides may still quote a lower number. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and full Nitro allows much more. Server Boosts can also raise the limit for everyone in a boosted server.
Custom emoji are much stricter. Discord asks for emoji under 256 KB, and 128 × 128 px is the recommended size. Discord's own guide also notes that you need Nitro to use animated emoji. For server-ready GIFs, see the Discord GIF maker.
X (Twitter): web vs mobile app
X's help center lists 15 MB for GIFs posted from the web and 5 MB from the mobile app, so a GIF that uploads from your laptop can fail on your phone. X's developer guidance also recommends staying within 1280 × 1080 and 350 frames, and X plays GIFs back as MP4 video. More on that on the Twitter video to GIF page.
Slack: inline display and custom emoji
Slack's file limit is 1 GB, so size alone rarely blocks a GIF. Whether it animates is a per-person setting: on desktop it's Automatically play animations in Slack under Preferences, Accessibility. If a teammate sees a still image, that setting is the likely cause. The 5 MB figure is our recommendation, not Slack's rule. Big GIFs are slow to load in busy channels, and Make a copy for Slack on the result page re-encodes a smaller copy.
For custom emoji, Slack says square images under 128 KB work best, and GIFs can include up to 50 frames.
Email, Twitch and other places
- Email: Mailchimp recommends keeping GIFs under 1 MB. Some desktop versions of Outlook for Windows show only the first frame, and Microsoft notes this also happens when animations are turned off in Outlook or Windows, so put the key message in frame one.
- Twitch emotes: animated emotes are for Affiliates and Partners. At the time of writing, Twitch asks for a square GIF of 1 MB or less with no more than 60 frames.
- iMessage and Google Slides: see the table above. DropGIF's Where it fits strip checks both as you edit.
How to make a GIF smaller
GIF size comes down to pixels, frames and colors. Change these in order, checking the live size estimate as you go:
- Width: going from 480 to 320 px cuts each frame to less than half the pixels.
- Frame rate: 12 fps looks smooth for most clips and has 40% fewer frames than 20 fps.
- Length: trim dead time at the start and end. Every second counts.
- Colors: under Advanced, try 128 or 64 instead of 256.
- Dithering: None makes the smallest file, Pattern sits in the middle, and Smooth is largest.
- Crop: cut empty space with Crop so every pixel shows something.
Skip the trial and error: tap Fit next to any platform in Where it fits, and DropGIF adjusts width, frame rate and colors for you to get under it. The video to GIF converter has it built in.
